These volunteers will get involved in policing by volunteering to independently observe the policing of protests and demonstrations.  The role may involve attending briefings in the lead up to events, attending events themselves as an observer and attending post event briefings.

We currently have a number of experienced and dedicated volunteers who work hard to ensure standards are high and that members of the public are well-serviced.  Both the OPCC and the PCC, are very grateful for their continued hard work and service.

Chris Upham, Independent Observer of Protests and Demonstrations, said: “I’m a retired police officer and I use my expertise to ensure serving police officers are treating protestors and demonstrators fairly, from the initial planning stage of large police operations to on the day itself. The Independent Observers are a critical friend to the PCC and give the commissioner regular feedback on how officers can improve how they manage protests and demonstrations.”

If you are interested in becoming an Independent Observer of Protests and Demonstrations, please leave us your details here and we will contact you when we have any vacancies.
