A project which aims to bring the local community in Latchford, Warrington closer together is being backed by the Cheshire’s police and crime commissioner.

David Keane has awarded a grant from his Safer Communities Fund to St Werburgh’s Community Hub which provides activities for young people and the elderly with an aim of reducing anti-social behaviour and social isolation.

St Werburgh’s Community Hub has been providing activities in the local area since 2011, with the sole purpose of improving the wellbeing of vulnerable people.

It provides a range of activities for the local community including regular exercise classes, luncheon clubs, coffee mornings, parent/toddler groups and basic IT classes.

The funding from the commissioner will allow the parent and toddler group and elderly residents to build relationships by taking part in cultural activities including trips out of the community.

PCC David Keane said:

“It is vital that we support voluntary organisations like St Werburgh’s Community Hub so they can provide activities which make our communities safer places to live and reduce social isolation.

“When someone is engaged with their local community, they are less likely to suffer from poor wellbeing or get involved in crime or anti-social behaviour.

“The group does fantastic work with local PCSOs, ensuring residents in the area are engaged with the police and have access to crime prevention advice so they don’t fall victim to offences like cybercrime.”

Cllr Les Morgan who helps run St Werburgh’s Community Hub added:

“This funding from the commissioner will help us bring our community closer together, especially people that do not realise that they are indeed vulnerable.

“The assistance from our PCSOs has been a major part in helping us to develop and deliver this project, and we are aware that the continued relationship between our users and PCSOs is important to their wellbeing.

“This award is just one example of the excellent work that PCC David Keane is doing for communities in Cheshire.”

St Werburgh’s Community Hub is one of 22 projects across Cheshire which has recently received Safer Communities Funding to support crime prevention or meet the objectives within the commissioner’s police and crime plan.
