6-12 June marks the annual Child Safety Week campaign by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), which aims to educate families on potential risks to their child’s safety and how these can be avoided. Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, John Dwyer, is urging parents to remember the key message: ‘keep safety in mind’.
With accidents being the leading cause of death and serious injury in children, Child Safety Week is a crucial support network and source of information for families.
Police and Crime Commissioner, John Dwyer, said:
“The message behind Child Safety Week is so important and the support that CAPT is providing to families is extremely valuable. Many of the accidents we see children injured from are avoidable, especially on our roads, and as the world opens back up and our lives become busier it’s essential that we do keep safety in mind.
“In my Police and Crime Plan one of my key priorities is making Cheshire’s roads safer, and that means educating all road users. If we can open up conversations between parents and guardians here in Cheshire through the Child Safety Week campaign, we will be making steps towards keeping babies, children and young people safer and more secure on our roads.”
Other issues raised by the campaign are burns, poisoning, choking hazards and drowning. With an estimated average of 110 children per day being seen in emergency departments with burn injuries, the campaign provides practical advice on how these accidents can be avoided, such as:
