Warrington youth initiatives thrive with Active Futures grant support
On 30th April, Dan Price, Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner joined representatives from Active Cheshire and Cheshire Community Foundation for a special visit to Warrington Youth Zone, where they witnessed first-hand the impact of the Active Futures programme on young people’s lives.
The visit highlighted two inspiring projects funded through the Active Futures grants – Warrington Wolves Foundation’s TRY HARD programme and Warrington Youth Zone’s Leaders of Tomorrow programme. Both initiatives use sport and personal development activities to empower young people, helping them build confidence, skills, and positive futures.
The Active Futures programme – a coalition between Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Active Cheshire, and Cheshire Community Foundation – has invested £210,000 into 11 community projects across the county, using sport as a catalyst to promote health, opportunity, and community engagement.
Dan Price, Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner said:
“I want to provide more youth provisions for young people in our county, and I will bring together the right people to make sure this happens. Active Futures is an example of how funding is changing lives in Warrington. But it’s more than just funding activities. It’s creating structure, purpose and real opportunities for young people. This is what building thriving communities looks like.”
Mel Sproston, Chief Executive of Cheshire Community Foundation, added:
“The impact of these grants is truly heartening. We are proud to be part of a coalition that is funding real change. Seeing young people gaining qualifications, confidence, and a sense of belonging reminds us exactly why initiatives like Active Futures are so vital.”
Mike Watson Active Cheshire CEO said:
“Physical activity is a proven catalyst for mental health improvement, resilience, and social inclusion. Programmes like TRY HARD and Leaders of Tomorrow show that when you invest in young people’s potential, the ripple effects across the community are profound.”
At Warrington Youth Zone, visitors saw how the Leaders of Tomorrow programme is equipping 24 young people aged 14–18 with sports leadership skills, personal development workshops, and real work experience placements. Participants are already working towards nationally recognised Level 1 Sports Leaders qualifications, while developing vital life skills to prepare them for brighter futures.
Warrington Youth Zone Chief Executive, David McNicholl said:
“Our young people have faced real challenges, but with the right support they are thriving. Thanks to the Active Futures grant, we’re not only helping them gain qualifications but giving them the confidence and resilience to lead positive lives and make a difference in their communities.”
Meanwhile, at Warrington Wolves Foundation, the TRY HARD programme is supporting young people to thrive both in school and in their wider lives through the power of sport. By focusing on building communication skills, boosting confidence, improving school attendance, and encouraging healthy lifestyles, the programme offers a positive platform for young people to achieve their full potential.
Warrington Wolves Foundation’s Education Manager Amanda Hunt said:
“Through our TRY HARD programme, we’re helping young people discover their strengths and develop valuable life skills. Thanks to the Active Futures grant, participants are building resilience, forming positive connections, and gaining a renewed sense of pride in their achievements.”
The visit reinforced the enormous value of partnership funding and highlighted how a shared commitment to early intervention, sport, and community support can drive positive, lasting change across Cheshire.
