As part of National Volunteers week, we are shining a light on the important role of volunteers who help Dan Price, Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). The spotlight is on Police Dog Welfare Visitors who help ensure the wellbeing of Cheshire Constabulary’s valued four-legged friends.
Police dogs play a vital role in policing. From tracking suspects to searching for missing people, they are highly trained and dedicated members of the policing family. Behind the scenes, Police Dog Welfare Visitors help make sure these animals are treated with care, respect and compassion.
Police Dog Welfare Visitors are independent volunteers who visit the Cheshire Constabulary dog kennels and training facilities to check on the welfare of police dogs. These visits are unannounced, giving a real and honest picture of day-to-day conditions.
During a visit, volunteers observe how dogs are housed, trained and transported. They assess whether the dogs’ needs are being met, including access to food and water, proper bedding, space to move naturally and freedom from discomfort or distress. Principles often referred to as the “Five Freedoms” of animal welfare.
Volunteers also watch training sessions and review transport arrangements. Ensuring all practices are safe, humane and in line with high welfare standards. After each visit, they report their findings to the PCC, who takes action if needed.
What makes this role so important is its independence. Police Dog Welfare Visitors provide an objective view, helping to maintain transparency and public confidence. The scheme itself was introduced following historic concerns about police dog training, reinforcing the need for clear and accountable welfare standards.
Beyond the responsibilities, the role offers something more meaningful. The chance to see first-hand the dedication and partnership between handlers and their dogs, and to play a role in protecting their wellbeing.
Police Dog Welfare Visitors are a vital part of ensuring that the animals who support our officers are treated properly, both on and off duty. Their work helps guarantee that welfare standards remain high and that policing practices stay ethical and transparent.
Thank you to all of our Police Dog Welfare Visitors past and present, who have made a different here in Cheshire.
