The move follows feedback from young people across Cheshire, with more than 1,400 contributing to the Cheshire Youth Commission’s latest annual report. Their message was clear: young people want safe places to go, trusted adults to turn to and opportunities to feel part of something positive.
That insight is shaping local investment decisions, with The Dome Youth Zone standing as a flagship example, designed to provide a high-quality, accessible space where young people can feel secure, supported and inspired.
Further local research has underlined the risk of not acting. Evidence from Voices Unlocked, a project supported by the PCC’s SWAP fund, found that young people without a strong sense of belonging can feel increased pressure to join gangs or negative peer groups. The initiative, delivered by Whitby High School and Bishop’s Blue Coat School, brought students together to discuss the real challenges facing their generation and explore positive alternatives.
The Dome Youth Zone, due to open Winter 2026, will feature an indoor climbing wall, sports hall, training kitchen, music room with a recording studio and a fully equipped gym. It will also include a dance and drama studio, 3G pitch, arts and crafts room and an enterprise and employment suite. Young people will also benefit from access to youth workers and volunteers seven days a week, helping them reach their full potential in a safe environment.
The Dome will be open to young people aged between eight-19 (up to 25 for those with additional needs) seven days a week.
