Background
During a police interview, the young person – arrested for possession, making and distribution of indecent images of children – disclosed he was coerced into sharing an indecent image of himself to a person on the internet. This person then blackmailed him into sharing the indecent video.
What happened
The family were offered support from Queensberry AP, and had an initial meeting, where an intervention package was agreed upon.
A session outlining the tactics used by perpetrators to groom and exploit vulnerable young people enabled the young person to ask lots of questions and gain a better understanding of the situation he found himself in. He also watched Kayleigh’s Love Story (a video by Leicestershire Police) – a resource used by Queensberry AP – and read some further case studies identifying risks and how to avoid them.
Impact
The young person was able to identify steps that young people can take to avoid themselves ending up in similar situations to Kayleigh.
Feedback
The young person said:
“I think my favourite thing about the sessions is you showed me different people and their stories, how it happened and the impacts of what they did. Everything linked together and it helped me understand what grooming is. It has opened up my mind to how many different forms of grooming and exploitation there are and not just how it happened to me. I honestly think after having the sessions, I could now go to someone else and deliver the messages to also help them understand the dangers.”
